Home EV Charger Install: What Differs Across Riyadh, Jeddah & Dammam (2026)

Not every Saudi home is the same. Here's what differs across Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam when installing a home EV charger — and how to prepare for the site survey.

Before buying an EV in Saudi Arabia, the first question most people ask is: how much will it cost me to install a home charger? The answer depends on the charger type, the distance from the main panel, and the cable routing required — but there's one factor most guides skip: the city itself. A home in Riyadh isn't the same as a home in Jeddah or Dammam, and that translates into different costs and different challenges.

What changes by city?

Three things shift noticeably depending on where you live:

1) Three-phase availability: If you want a 22 kW charger (faster), you need a three-phase connection. It's much more common in newer neighborhoods, but older homes (more typical in historic Jeddah and central Riyadh) usually run on single-phase only and need coordination with the Saudi Electricity Company to upgrade.

2) Panel age: Villas in north Riyadh, new Jeddah (Obhur, Al Sharafiyyah) and new Dammam (Al Faisaliyyah, Al Rakah) usually have modern panels that handle the charger load with no upgrade. Older neighborhoods may need a panel swap, a dedicated breaker, and a load increase from the utility.

3) Parking layout: Standalone villas in Dammam and Riyadh usually have a closed garage or a wide front driveway, which makes it easy to wall-mount the charger close to the panel. Apartment buildings in Jeddah and parts of Riyadh (like older Olaya) often have shared parking or parking that's far from the panel — longer cable runs, more complexity.

Riyadh: what to expect

Newer neighborhoods (Al Narjis, Al Jawhara, Al Malqa, Hittin) usually have modern panels and three-phase ready in many homes — a 22 kW charger install is usually possible without an upgrade. In older central and southern neighborhoods (Al Mansoura, Al Sha'lan), the situation is different: typically single-phase only, smaller panels, so a 7.4 kW charger or a load upgrade first is the recommendation. The summer heat means the charger should be in a closed garage or under a canopy — direct sun shortens its life.

Jeddah and the coast: what to expect

Jeddah has two extra challenges compared to Riyadh: high humidity, and the age of some older wiring. Humidity means the charger should be IP54 rated or higher (to handle moisture and dust), and outdoor cabling needs better insulation. In Obhur, Al Safa and Al Sharafiyyah the infrastructure is relatively new; in historic neighborhoods (Al Ruwais, Al Balad) you'll want a deeper electrical site survey.

Dammam and the Eastern Province: what to expect

Dammam, Al Khobar and Dhahran usually have three-phase available in modern villas, and SEC infrastructure in the region is mature. The coastal humidity and salt air challenge is real — pick a charger with a high IP rating (IP54+) and a corrosion-resistant body. In older industrial neighborhoods (Al Amriyah, Al Dawasir) the wiring needs a more careful inspection.

When do you need a load upgrade?

Most Saudi homes can absorb a 7.4 kW charger without a load upgrade. But if you have lots of AC units and a small meter (e.g. 50 amps), or you want a 22 kW charger, you'll usually need a load upgrade from the Saudi Electricity Company. The process typically takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on your local office's schedule.

Our advice before installing

Book a free site survey with a certified installer before you buy the charger. The survey tells you whether three-phase is available, how far the panel is, and whether a meter upgrade is needed — which in turn defines the right charger and your actual budget. Climatech Charger offers free site surveys across Riyadh, Jeddah, and the Eastern Province.
